Turkish food is famous throughout the world. Prices are extremely reasonable especially in the local restaurants known as ‘Lokantas’ which are usually family run. A typical selection found on a menu will include main dishes and desserts such as:-
ET GUVEC – A meat dish comprising onions, green peppers, garlic, tomatoes and spices, cooked on an open flame, served with rice and salad.
LAHMACUN – A variety of Turkish pizza which is topped with mince, onion, garlic, tomatoes and spices. You will see locals place their side salad on top of the cooked lahmacun and roll it into pancake shape before eating.
ISKENDER KEBAP – Made with thinly sliced, spiced beef, served on a pitta bread base with a side serving of yoghurt and salad. Turkey is famous for its kebabs & there are a wide variety in chicken, lamb & mince - it must be pointed out that the Döner kebabs you find in the UK bear very little resemblance to the Turkish original! The meat is fresh pieces of lamb or beef pressed on a skewer in either fresh bread or rolled in pitta bread. These delicious kebabs are usually accompanied with freshly chopped onion, parsley, salca (concentrated fresh tomato paste), yoghurt, herbs & spices and hot chilli flakes as an option - and not bottled lemon juice or commercial chilli sauce as in the UK!
BÖREK - traditional turkish pastry rolls or slices filled with chopped spinach, cheeses, minced meat or potatoes.
SÜTLAÇ – A very famous dessert within Turkey, it is actually their derivative of rice pudding, only slightly sweeter and served cold.
BAKLAVA – A pastry containing walnuts which is heavily sugar coated and extremely sweet to taste but is often found baking in a traditional Turkish home to offer to the multitude of guests that may visit.
VEGETARIAN DISHES - There are many vegetarian mezes & main course dishes using fresh seasonal vegetables including tomatoes, aubergine, grated carrot, beetroot, chickpeas, green beans, white beans, artichoke, spinach often prepared with pure olive oil.
